Venous Diseases and Methods Of Treatment - Chronic Venous Disease

This problem is caused by incompetent valves and scarring in the deep veins, usually as a result of prior deep vein clots. As a result of problems in the deep veins the pressure in these veins is reflected onto the superficial veins and the skin and tissues surrounding them. This leads to edema and swelling of the leg, thinning and discoloration of the overlying skin and eventual ulceration of the skin.

The evaluation and treatment of these problems is best accomplished by a vascular surgeon and may involve local dressings with special growth factor, custom made hose, and possible surgical correction.
